Brief description of proposed R&D project:
Green Communications Consortium – Currently, Information & Communication Technology (ICT) such as wireless communications require about 8% of total global energy consumption and that is equivalent of 2.5% carbon emission. If unchanged, the ICT energy consumption will increase to about 15% in 10 years’ time. In view of this, the US and European Communities have set up partnerships in consortium to address these ICT challenges. In Asia, in particular, Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), A*STAR, Singapore, takes the initiative to form this consortium whereby IHPC will develop a simulation tool that supports in optimizing the radio base stations, which contribute to more than 50% of total energy consumption for mobile communications. The developed simulation tool will assist in cutting the power consumption through customizing the (1) Antenna (Transmitter), (2) Detector (Receiver), (3) Modulation (Baseband) and (4) Power Amplifiers (Electronics).
Ultimately, this consortium aims towards commercialization of the researched software algorithm to reduce power consumption of the Radio Base Stations (RBS) with Activistar Pte Ltd, Zephyr Corporation, Japan and Sunlabob International, Lao.
IHPC has proposed a novel approach of a holistic solution using adaptive power model which is to be developed by software algorithm to evaluate energy efficiency (EE) and reduce power consumption at the RBS. This software algorithm aims to commercialize development work from the component level to network deployment of the entire mobile communications instead of focusing only on individual component level.
